SR Corridor Stock
(West of England ‘W’ Sets 100-110)

[Also earlier ex.LSWR-stock 3 LAV sets 101-110]

2 coach ‘W’ set 109 awaits the ‘road’ at Tipton St. Johns on Tuesday, 27th May 1958 with the 5.56pm to Exmouth. Note the difference in size between the ex.SECR Diag.52 CL-liveried Second 1087 and Diag.2401 Green-liveried Maunsell BCK 6594.

R. F. Roberts (Mike King collection)

Created in 1958, the two-coach ‘W’ sets were employed on the Southern’s West of England routes (W standing for West of England). Numbered 100 to 110, these sets comprised of a Maunsell Corridor Brake  Composite initially paired with an ex.SECR 100-seat non-corridor compartment Third (by then classified as Second) thence a Maunsell Second Open.

The earlier ex.LSWR-stock 3 LAV sets in the number range 101 to 110 are detailed in Appendix 2. Reformed in 1936 with diagram 125 & 285 coaches, these 3 LAV sets were withdrawn /disbanded as follows:

The 1958-formed sets 100 to 110 were always allocated to the Western Section and in general were used on the Exeter - Exmouth, Sidmouth, Lyme Regis and Callington branches. Some ran as a single BCK during the 'winter' period and contemporary photographs shew that a number of these sets operated with the brake innermost, possibly some from when sets were booked to be split for some services (being recoupled with the brake ‘innermost’). However, a photograph of set 103 (see below) shews the set number on the end of the second open coupled to the BCK brake van ‘innermost’ which suggests it was deliberately formed this way.

2 coach ‘W’-set 103 Open Saloon 1304 at Exeter Central on 8th September 1962. The adjacent coach is probably 6905; many of these sets appear to have run with the brake van positioned at the set’s inner-end following reformation with an SO.

A. E. West (Mike King collection)

Liveries

On the Southern Region, coaching stock sets (and multiple-units) were normally repainted (and varnished) as a complete set leading to a significant degree of consistency within each set. Lancing Carriage works was releasing repainted stock in SR Green early-February 1949 with Crimson Lake and Cream (CLC) appearing at least by March 1949.

However, when permission was given for the Southern Region to return to Green for its Corridor Passenger stock it rapidly embarked on a programme to repaint at the A2 repair for a number of vehicles in order to accelerate the return to Green. The last Crimson Lake & Cream vehicle outshopped from Lancing carriage works appears to have been on 17th July 1956 with the first BR Green set outshopped on 11th July 1956.

‘W’ set 104 was formed in March 1958 with a Crimson Lake & Cream BCK coach 6589 until the BCK was outshopped BR(S) Green on 27th February 1959; all other ‘W’ sets appear to have been formed with Green liveried BCK coaches.

Unlike the BCK coaches, the ex.SECR Seconds do not appear to have had the set number painted on their coach-ends. In terms of these Seconds (and given most of these were withdrawn from passenger use around 1959) it is understood all retained Crimson Lake livery whilst in the ‘W’ sets. Those Seconds used in set 103, 104, 107, 109 & 110 were all withdrawn in  Crimson Lake livery.

For example, coach 970 (used in set 110) was Crimson Lake livery whilst being used on the Lyme Regis branch in August 1959. Ex.LSWR compartment set 42 used on the branch was withdrawn on 2nd November 1957 and set 102 was used on the branch in 1958. Besides set 110 (1959), reformed set 109 appeared there in 1961.

Where currently known, the table below provides the outshopping paint-date of the coaches in these sets.
