Passenger Carrying Coaches
LSWR ‘Cross Country’ Sets

(130-324)

Outshopped Crimson Lake livery 15th January 1952,
3 LAV set 130 is seen at Fareham on 23rd May 1953
© Pamlin Prints/K.G. Carr. (Mike King collection)

Outshopped in Crimson Lake livery 15th January 1952 and having had ‘S’ suffices added during its 5th December 1952 varnishing, 3 LAV set 130 at Fareham on 23rd May 1953, with the number of BTL S2983S (nearest) being clearly visible. Although the First-class ‘1’s on the composite aren’t visible (even when enhanced) it is anticipated that they were still present.

130-151,  251-263,  310-314  &  324

From 1904 onwards the LSWR started building four coach ‘Cross Country’ sets resulting in some seventy-five sets in service prior to the Grouping. Sets were formed BTL (3rd) – CL (3rd /2nd) – CL (1st /3rd) – BTL (3rd). However, with the decline in Second-class travel the composite lavatories in these sets were steadily reclassified to Third-class following the LSWR’s managed decline in Second-class travel from 1914, leading to the LSWR’s cessation of Second-class in 1918.

Set changes across the LSWR came following a fall in traffic with the Great Depression of 1929-1930 alongside a drive to eliminate gas lighting and wooden underframes. Third-class coaches in these cross-country sets were removed in the mid-to late thirties with some First-class compartments in the Composite Lavatory coaches downgraded to Third-class. Most of the Third-class coaches initially became Loose vehicles before being reused in other sets (those documented on the Lancing Works Record Cards are noted both in the set tables and ‘Loose TL Vehicles’ Appendix below).

In 1946 the Southern started building new main line coaches to Bulleid’s designs with the BR Mk1 stock following after nationalisation. Maunsell main line stock was increasingly cascaded onto secondary services with the now-antiquated ex.LSWR stock related to lessor duties. It was not unknown for some pre-grouping sets to work just one return trip a day.

Sets were already being withdrawn under Southern Railway ownership. Most of these sets were withdrawn by end-1956 (on paper set 139 made it to 26th January 1957 and set 314 wasn’t withdrawn until June 1957) although many of the Loose Thirds made it through to 1957. Some departmental vehicles and camping coaches survived for longer (see ‘Departmental Vehicles’ Appendix).

Sets and Numbering

Built to route-restriction ‘2’, the Southern Railway renumbered these sets and the SR numbers are quoted throughout this page; particularly as many the details of these changes (including LSWR coach & set numbering) are already covered in both Gordon Weddell’s and Mike King’s books (see Recommended Reading).

The Southern normally operated its coaching sets in their fixed formations with the complete set usually removed from traffic for maintenance or repair.

While many of these cross-country sets had their TL removed in the late thirties; others had been extended (for example 311to 314 & 324 in the early twenties). Others such as set 132 was reduced to 2 LAV (by 1946) and set 312 (2 Lav in December 1946).

Liveries

When the sets were re-numbered by the Southern Railway during the nineteen-twenties this was probably undertaken during a full repaint.

Whilst the pre-nationalisation Lancing Carriage Works Record Cards for these sets survive, most of those for 1948-on are currently missing. Accordingly there are few specific dates on Crimson Lake livery, so only an informed consideration can be made as to whether sets carried this livery (or not) based around factors such as the last known paint-date, the ten-year painting cycle and withdrawal dates.

Lancing Carriage Works was still releasing repainted stock in (post-war) SR Malachite Green early February 1949 with Crimson Lake (and Cream) appearing at least by March 1949. Early-on, some Crimson Lake liveried coaches were waist-lined although it is not yet known if any of these ex.LSWR sets had this lining applied.

The Southern Third-class ‘3’ was usually removed from the coach doors by BR during first varnish or repaint and BR Gill Sans carriage numbers would also have been applied at this time.

Being pre-nationalisation stock, under British Railways the coach numbers carried S-prefix and (after May 1951) S-suffix with coaches being modified during their next varnish or repaint. These respectively denoted Southern Region allocation and Southern Railway (or earlier) design. The May 1951 edict required carriage numbering to be on the right-hand end of each coach.

However, many of these ex.LSWR sets would have been withdrawn by British Railways still in pre-nationalisation SR green, albeit with BR number styles (including S-prefix & S-suffix on individual coach numbers) having been adopted during one of the 2½-yearly varnishing cycles. It is believed that none of these ex.LSWR ‘Cross Country’ were outshopped in the darker BR(S) Green-livery (as applied from July 1956-on).

In general, the last Crimson Lake & Cream (CLC) vehicle outshopped from Lancing carriage works appear to be loose-allocated High Window Maunsell SK S1376S on 17th July 1956 which followed set 466 (all of its eight coaches variously outshopped between 18th June 1956 and 10th July 1956) and individual coach 7964 (from CLC Set 440) along with Loose Second Open 1218. The first BR(S) Green-livery set outshopped by Lancing was corridor set 974 on 11th July 1956 and the on the 18th July 1956 Bulleid SK S61S was the first repainted from Crimson Lake & Cream into BR(S) Green-livery.

Abolition of Second Class

Third- class was designated second-class following the abolition of second-class by British Railways on Sunday 3rd June 1956 with the third-class ‘3’ already having been removed usually during first post-nationalisation varnishing or repainting. However, with the decline in Second-class travel around the turn of the century the composite lavatories in these Cross Country sets had already been reclassified to Third-class between 1916 and 1918.

Compilation

In terms of information sources Glen Woods regularly used the terms ‘Lancing’ and ‘Waterloo’ record cards although the latter was slightly misleading as this term simply came from the offices from where Glen acquired them; these record cards having been maintained at the CM&EE Rolling Stock Records Office, based in Tooley Street, London Bridge (until 1966 when the CM&EE moved to the newly constructed Southern House at Croydon).

The Carriage & Wagon Notice Appendices (CWNA) are a useful source of information although to contain discrepancies and could not cover changes made after publication.

Prepared by Colin Watts with much thanks to the work of the late Glen Woods, historical author Mike King (including permission to use photographs from his collection) and the works of Gordon Weddell. This page may be subject to updates and corrections as further information becomes available.
