‘L’ sets 830 to 849

Introduced for the Summer 1950 timetable, the first eight sets (830 to 837) of these Bulleid stock to enter traffic were with 3 Cor (three-coach Corridor) but were later strengthened to five coaches using ‘Loose’ TK coaches 114 to 121 & 123 to 130. The remaining twelve sets (838 to 849) entered service as 5 Cor from new.

These ‘L’ sets (830 to 849) were built at Eastleigh Works to H.O order 3454. The BTK coaches were to Diag.2123, the CK to Diag.2318 and the TK to Diag.2017; these coaches having 15” sliding vents.

Coaches were constructed in reverse order in readiness for formation into sets:

Corridor Thirds

When 3 Cor sets were strengthened with Loose Corridor Third coaches (H.O. Orde 3580) these were supposed to be placed either side of the Corridor Composite. However, there were times when a pair of  Corridor Third coaches were inserted together on one side of the Corridor Composite.

Sets 830 to 833

Into service new as 3 Cor sets in Crimson Lake & Cream thence BR(S) Green livery from 1956-on. As 3 Cor sets, these were strengthened to five coaches during the summer seasons. The strengthening should normally have been BTK+TK+CK+TK+BTK but sets may appeared formed BTK+CK+TK+TK+BTK.

These Sets were later augmented in November 1959 to 5 Cor with the addition of two Green-liveried SK coaches.

Sets 833 to 837

Into service new as 3 Cor sets in Crimson Lake & Cream livery. As 3 Cor sets, these were strengthened to five coaches during the summer seasons. The strengthening should normally have been BTK+TK+CK+TK+BTK but sets may have appeared formed BTK+CK+TK+TK+BTK.

Augmented in January 1953 to 5 Cor with the addition of two Crimson Lake & Cream liveried TK coaches.

Sets received BR(S) Green livery from 1956-on.

Sets 838 to 849

Into service new as 5 Cor sets in Crimson Lake & Cream livery. Official formation should have been BTK+TK+CK+TK+BTK. However, the Lancing Carriage Works Record Card state BTK+CK+TK+TK+BTK and sets may have sets appeared formed thus.

Sets received BR(S) Green livery from 1956-on.

Abolition of Second-class & Set Working

On Sunday, 3rd June 1956 British Railways abolished Second-class travel and immediately renamed Third-class to Second-class. Any remaining Third-class ‘3’ on pre-nationalisation liveried coach doors were removed; usually at the next varnish (A2 exam).

Set working discontinued from 13th June 1966.

Formation of Sets

This official formation of sets was BTK+TK+CK+TK+BTK. However, they were often formed BTK+TK+TK+CK+BTK (being easier for the shunters when sets were seasonally adjusted to three-coaches) and this arrangement was sometimes carried on the Lancing Carriage Works Record Cards. So, the table of Official Formation (immediately below) is repeated to shew those just sets at variance with the official formation (Lancing Carriage Works Record Cards).

Liveries

On the Southern Region, coaching stock sets (and multiple-units) were normally repainted (and varnished) as a complete set leading to a significant degree of consistency within each set. Lancing Carriage works was releasing repainted stock in SR Green early-February 1949 with Crimson Lake and Cream (CLC) appearing at least by March 1949.

However, when permission was given for the Southern Region to return to Green for its Corridor Passenger stock it rapidly embarked on a programme to repaint at the A2 repair for a number of vehicles in order to accelerate the return to Green. The last Crimson Lake & Cream vehicle (last of an eight-set) outshopped from Lancing carriage works on 17th July 1956 (the first BR Green set was outshopped earlier on 11th July 1956).

Where currently known, the table below provides the outshopping paint-date of the coaches used in these sets; for strengthened sets their original coaches all entered service in Crimson Lake & Cream livery with replacement and augmentation coaches being shewn in italic typeface.

Only sets 830-833 remained as 3 Cor in CLC livery; these were augmented to 5 Cor until after they had been repainted into BR(S) Green in November 1959. Sets 834 to 837 (3 Cor) were augmented to 5 Cor whilst still in CLC livery (Jan-53) and sets 838 to 849 were built as 5 Cor from new.

Date of vehicle withdrawn stated where known. However, please refer to the set notes to see from what set (or ’loose’) the coach was withdrawn.
