‘L’ sets 770 to 793

In 1946 the first three-coach sets of Bulleid stock to entered traffic were with 3 Cor (three-coach Corridor) ‘L’ sets 771 to 793 (Waterloo –Salisbury – West of England /Waterloo - Weymouth). Built to H.O order 3235, The BTK coaches were to Diag.2123 & the CK to Diag.2318; these coaches had 10¼” sliding vents.

On Sunday, 3rd June 1956 British Railways abolished Second-class travel and immediately renamed Third-class to Second-class. Any remaining Third-class ‘3’ on pre-nationalisation coach doors were removed; usually at the next varnish (A2 exam).

Liveries

On the Southern Region, coaching stock sets (and multiple-units) were normally repainted (and varnished) as a complete set leading to a significant degree of consistency within each set. Lancing Carriage works was releasing repainted stock in SR Green early-February 1949 with Crimson Lake and Cream (CLC) appearing at least by March 1949.

The Southern Region’s Lancing Carriage works was releasing repainted stock in SR Green early February 1949 with Crimson Lake (and Cream) appearing at least by March 1949.

With the subsequent varnishes of Malachite Green stock, Gill Sans was adopted. Besides ‘Southern lettering, Third-class ‘3’s were removed at this time with the First-class ‘1’ being repositioned on doors.

During May 1951 a directive was issued that coach numbers were only to be applied to the right-hand end (having previously been positioned at the left-hand end). The repositioning of coach numbers also occurred during subsequent varnishes of both Malachite Green and Crimson Lake & Cream.

As an example, from Lancing’s varnishing records it is believed (but not confirmed) that set 790 was outshopped with Gill Sans 13th January 1950 and right-hand number positioning 5th February 1952.

However, when permission was given for the Southern Region to return to Green for its Corridor Passenger stock it rapidly embarked on a programme to repaint at the A2 repair for a number of vehicles in order to accelerate the return to Green. The last Crimson Lake & Cream vehicle (last of an eight-set) outshopped from Lancing carriage works on 17th July 1956 (the first BR Green set was outshopped earlier on 11th July 1956).

Where currently known, the table below provides the outshopping paint-date of the coaches used in these sets; for strengthened sets their original coaches all entered service in Crimson Lake & Cream livery with replacement and augmentation coaches being shewn in italic typeface.

Set 788 outshopped ‘Plum & Spilt Milk’ livery 7th August 1948 (see unit notes).

Off these sets, only 770, 771, 774, 780, 781, 788, 790 & 793 received Crimson Lake & Cream livery with the remainder being repainted from post-War Malachite into BR(S) Green.

Date of vehicle withdrawn stated (those transferred to the W.R. are not currently known). However, please refer to the set notes to see from what set (or ’loose’) the coach was withdrawn.
