Liveries
On the Southern Region, coaching stock sets (and
multiple-units) were normally repainted (and varnished) as a complete set
leading to a significant degree of consistency within each set. Lancing
Carriage works was releasing repainted stock in SR Green early-February 1949
with Crimson Lake and Cream (CLC) appearing at least by March 1949.
Adoption of Gill Sans
During the early varnishes,
Gill Sans was adopted. Besides ‘Southern lettering, Third-class ‘3’s were
removed at this time with the First-class ‘1’ being repositioned on doors. The
table below sets out the outshopping date for this varnish from Lancing works. The
repositioning of coach numbers also occurred during early varnishes.
BR(S) Green
However, when permission
was given for the Southern Region to return to Green for its Corridor Passenger
stock it rapidly embarked on a programme to repaint at the A2 repair for a
number of vehicles in order to accelerate the return to Green. The last Crimson
Lake & Cream vehicle (last of an eight-set) outshopped from Lancing
carriage works on 17th July 1956 (the first BR Green set was outshopped
earlier on 11th July 1956).
Abolition
Second-class
On Sunday, 3rd
June 1956 British Railways abolished Second-class travel and immediately
renamed Third-class to Second-class. Any remaining Third-class ‘3’ on
pre-nationalisation coach doors were removed; usually at the next varnish (A2
exam).

Set
774 has a discrepancy on the CM&EE Record Card with date ‘in’ being
12-May-59 for an A2 exam but date ‘out’ as 30-May-58. However, with an E4
exam 8-May-56 (outshopped) and the A2 exams every two years 1958 would sit
with the A2 exam of 26-Oct-60 (outshopped). |
