Balcombe Tunnel

Introduction

Balcombe tunnel was constructed between 1838 and 1841 under the engineering direction of John Rastrick. The brick-lined tunnel has five vents along its 1,141 yard-length (32m 2ch to 32m 54ch) as identified by Network Rail Infrastructure Limited’s (NRIL) Sectional Appendix and suffers from the ingress of water.

Current line-speed in the tunnel is 90mph on both Up and Down lines although this is reduced to 75mph for trains undertaking bi-directional running.

1881 Murder

On the afternoon of 27^th June 1881, 64-year-old Isaac Frederick Gold (of Preston Park) was attacked with both knife and pistol on the 2 p.m. London Bridge to Brighton train. As the train passed through Balcombe tunnel, Gold was thrown from a first-class smoking compartment in the third carriage; his mutilated body being quickly discovered by two platelayers. His murderer (22-year-old Percy Lefroy Mapelton) was tried at Maidstone Assises and subsequently hanged at Lewes Gaol on 29^th November 1881.

Water Ingress

Historically, metal sheets were fitted to divert the penetrating water. However, the variance in air pressure created by the passage of trains sometimes resulted in the metal sheets being torn from the structure, creating a serious hazard to the trains, personnel and track.

Following trials carried out during Railtrack Ltd’s ownership a water management system using polypropylene plastic material secured in position by specially designed yellow brick plugs (sealed using compression seals) was adopted to replace the metal sheeting.

Lining Collapse

On 23^rd September 2011, the crew of the northbound Speno rail-grinding train (returning from a possession) observed in its huge-headlamp that part of a large steel structure mounted in the roof of the tunnel (spanning both tracks) was sagging. It was found that on one side of the structure three supports had become detached from the tunnel lining, leaving a twelve-metre length partially supported.

En-route to his early-Control turn at Croydon, railwayman John Atkinson saw the Speno train arriving at Redhill platform 1 (c.05:30hrs to reverse into the sidings) only to learn of the incident. With the Brighton Main Line now blocked between Haywards Heath and Three Bridges the morning peak was in complete disarray.

Some services were routed via the Arun Valley line whilst buses linked Haywards Heath to Three Bridges and even Uckfield just to try and keep people moving. The line was closed for most of the day and into the evening peak.

One of six such structures within the tunnel, this was intended to catch water dripping from the tunnel roof being supported by anchor studs fixed with polyester resin into holes drilled in the tunnel’s brick lining. Within the tunnel some eighteen studs were found to be missing; another five were loose.

The RAIB investigation found that this was inadequate because the resin was not compatible with the tunnel brickwork and may have been adversely affected by shrinkage and the damp conditions in the tunnel.

Further Works

Network Rail Infrastructure Limited (NRIL) undertook significant tunnel works in October 2018 and February 2019.

They obviously didn't have line side cabinets in 1839 so I like the suggestion that these deep recesses were to keep the horses in when it was under construction. It meant they didn't have to be led out and back in every day. There are stable recesses in the Brighton Cab tunnel too. Note the ground-level two-aspect signal (side-on) just to the left of the recess.

There are three of these bricked-up recesses in the Up wall. I did read somewhere they were to hold pumping equipment.
