Many of the Southern’s Pull-Push sets were over thirty years old when the British Transport Commission announced its thirty-year rule for rolling stock. With the Kent Coast electrification still progressing and delivery of many of the new 2H diesel multiple units awaited, the need for twenty ‘new’ Pull-Push sets was identified. So, in 1959 Lancing Works started converting surplus coaches for Pull-Push operation, their set numbers having been previously allocated to ex.SECR Birdcage Sets.

Conversion of Maunsell Stock

Those vehicles converted were restriction ‘4’ Maunsell coaches comprising 1935-built ‘flush-sided’ Brake Corridor Composite (BCK) coaches (two first-class and four second-class compartments) and 1934-built Second Open (SO) coaches (seven second-class seating bays). Livery was BR(S) Green.

The BCK coaches for pull-push sets 614 to 619 were sourced from North Cornwall ‘P’ sets with these ‘P’ sets receiving replacement older Maunsell BCK coaches. The SO coaches were all previously designated as ‘Loose’.

Conversion included taking the lavatories out-of-use and removal of the outer-end gangways on both coaches. As a consequence, the SO was equipped with Spencer-Moulton buffers at its outer-end.

The brake area of each BCK had a driving area created therein, the guard’s duckets being replaced with droplights and two forward observation lights cut into the coach end. However, only a driver’s forward observation light was provided with a wiper. The driver in the BCK was able to control the locomotive regulator and brakes remotely via the Southern’s pneumatic pull-push system.

August 1961

The Brighton – Horsham – Guildford stock workings had been operated by Maunsell pull-push sets (strengthened with ex.SECR seconds). However, from August 1961 Maunsell 3 Cor sets in the number series 222–232 took over enabling the ex.SECR seconds to be withdrawn and push-pull sets 601, 605 & 607 to be transferred to Eastbourne for the Hailsham services.

November 1961

Following its transfer and subsequent damage at Eastbourne, set 607 was disbanded with its Second Open used as ‘Loose’ to strengthen Lymington Branch services.

March 1962

By March 1962 all the old pull-push sets were extinct with the Oxted – East Grinstead - Tunbridge Wells local services being operated by sets 600, 602, 617 & 619.

June 1963

Sets 618 & 619 disbanded for Hayling Island use (Second Opens to ‘Loose’).

October 1963

By October 1963 pull-push duties appeared to be as follow: Three Bridges - East Grinstead (one set plus set spare); Eastbourne – Hailsham (one set); Brockenhurst - Lymington, Brockenhurst - Bournemouth (three sets plus one or two spare sets and one spare trailer (SO 1343 ex.607) and Swanage Branch (one set). Sets 600, 601, 602 & 605 were withdrawn in December 1963. The new ‘East Sussex’ 3D diesel units had taken over most services into Tunbridge Wells West

Cessation of Pull-Push Working

Due to a shortage of M7 locomotives, steam-operated Southern Region pull-push operation ceased on 16th May 1964 when M7 30052 was replaced by a 2MT on the Lymington branch. Pull-push working both on the Swanage Branch and the Salisbury and Dorset Junction Railway (through Fordingbridge) had ended on 2nd May 1964; this being the last day of railway services on the latter.

However, sets 608, 615, 616 continued to be used as carriage pairs (along with SO 1342 ex.618) with set 603 (plus SO 1343 ex.607) on the Lymington Branch. The last of the pull-push sets were withdrawn in October 1964, just five years after these sets first appeared.

UIC Banding

Lancing Works started adding UIC yellow First-class cantrail bands during A2 & E4 exams from 3rd November 1962 so sets nos. 600, 601, 602, 603, 605, 607, 608, 609, 610 (no card), 612, 614, 615, 617, 618 & 619 did not receive these as their last Lancing A2 was prior to this date.

However, 616 was outshopped from an A-exam at Eastleigh 17th October 1963 and did receive a UIC yellow First-class cantrail band as did sets 606 (8th January 1964) and 613 (7th June 1963) whilst receiving A2 exams in Lancing Works.

Furthermore, sets 611 and 604 also received an A2 at Lancing Works (outshopped 4th February 1963 and 7th February 1963 respectively) placing both in the time-frame for UIC yellow bands. However, as yet there is no confirmation that either of these sets received them (nor air-horns).

Air-Horns

Sets 606, 612, 613, 616 and 617 were equipped with air-horns; evidence that 600 and 610 were similarly fitted has yet to emerge (set 600’s last A2 was 8th December 1961).

Set Notes
600-619

Notes for the Pull-Push sets 600-619 include District allocations as stated in the Appendices to Carriage Working Notices (CWNA). Initially sets 600-607 & 616-619 were intended for the London (Central) District with 610-611 to the South Eastern Section and the remainder (608, 609, 612-615 to the Western District.

However, sets were quite often seen operating ‘out of District’. Where evidence exists of their operation on specific routes then this is included in [italics]. However, this is by no means inclusive and is subject to confirmation.

Note

Sets undertook an A2 exam (set 614 was given an E4 exam) during conversion at Lancing Carriage Works. Although appearing in the 12th September 1960 CWNA, a number sets were not completed by that date.

607

Outshopped 6th January 1960, entered service London (Central) District. Set 607 was damaged at Eastbourne on 13th September 1961 and subsequently disbanded with BCK 6682 scrapped.

The 2.32pm Hailsham to Eastbourne formed of C2x engine no.32580 hauling pull-push set 607 pulled into Eastbourne station, engine detached and drew forward to run-round clear of stock.

Meanwhile another engine was attached to rear of the set (SO 1343) and a propelling movement was made towards the buffer stops before engine no.32580 was clear of the crossover.

As a consequence, the driving-end of BCK 6682 of set 607 collided with C2x engine no.32580 causing extensive damage to the coach and some damage to the engine.

On 15th September 1961 set 607 was disbanded with BCK 6682 immediately condemned due to a distorted underframe. On 8th October 1961 the Brighton Breakdown Crane lifted its body onto underframe 7222 ready for removal from site to Hassocks.

The distorted underframe of BCK 6682 was taken to Newhaven on 16th October 1961 where the pull & push equipment removed prior to scrapping.

The two bogies of BCK 6682 were dispatched to Lancing Works on 13th October 1961 as follows: 8911 on Lowfit M460316 & 8912 on Lowfit M460622.

Sustaining damaged end rails with slight body damage, SO 1343 was initially dispatched to Hassocks on 16th October 1961 (along with underframe 7222 carrying the body of BCK 6682).

SO 1343 was repaired at Lancing Works (entering 21st November 1961 - outshopped A2 plus damage repair 11th January 1962) thence to ‘Loose’ strengthening Lymington branch pull-push sets.

However, SO 1343 was involved in a further incident in No.1 platform road at Brockenhurst on 2nd November 1963 but undamaged. Unfortunately, pull-push set 384 was written off by M7 30053 during this incident.

SO 1343 was withdrawn on 31st October 1964.

CWNA 12th September 1960 – set allocated to London (Central) District.
CWNA 12th June 1961 - set allocated to London (Central) District.

Set 607 disbanded 15th September 1961.

Air-control Vans

For working with Pull-Push sets the Southern had a number of air-control vans with the ex.SECR diagram 960 vehicles (converted in August 1939) being withdrawn by December 1962. The last five air-control vans (SR plywood vans to diag.3103 nos.1621 to 1625) were converted by BR between November 1962 and March 1963 for use between Bournemouth and Brockenhurst with a significant amount to their traffic being perambulators etc. Air control vans also saw use on the Yeovil, Swanage and Lymington services.

On 18th November 1963 it was noted by Waterloo Inspectors that ‘pull-push P.M.V. no. 1621 was damaged at Bournemouth West recently, the brake ‘V’ iron bent, lever & rack removed and put inside. Carded to Eastleigh Works for repairs’. After pull-push operation ceased the air-control piping removed from these vans they went back into normal traffic.

In the background, a third ‘spare’ pull-push set (its driving coach is at the London-end) sits against the ‘stops’ in the former Up headshunt; the crossover to the Up line having been taken out of use on 22nd January 1956. The West box (already demoted to a ground frame on 25th March 1928) was closed on 3rd November 1957.

Pull-Push Sets
(Maunsell rebuilds 600-619)
Pull-push fitted M7 locomotive 30104 arriving at Lymington Pier.
The building on the left is the old Toilet /Waiting Room /Ticket Office from the original Lymington Pier station, these being retained following the northern platform & canopy extension; added when the Car Ferry Service was introduced using the new Voith Schneider-driven ferry M.V. Lymington (following commissioning of the new slipway on 24th May 1938).
Just beside the M7’s buffer-beam is the join in the platform between the original timber planking and the newer concrete /asphalt construction. This join is still present, although the adjacent buildings have long since demolished. The building in the distance is believed to be ‘Ferry House’.

Pull-push
Locomotives

The following pull-push air-control fitted steam locomotives have been identified as being in Southern Region pull-push service from 1960 to 1964 (including the division(s) during this period). However, it should not be assumed that all these locomotives operated with Maunsell pull-push sets. The table below is only meant to be a quick-reference guide.

Whilst some pull-push air-control fitted class O2 locomotives survived in the Plymouth area, to date there isn’t any indication that they ever worked with the Maunsell pull-push sets. The pull-push equipment fitted to the Ivatt 2-6-2 tank engines that operated on the Southern was not compatible with the Maunsell pull-push sets.

Sets 600-618
in Model Form

Branchlines produced a conversion kit for Ian Kirk 4mm Maunsell coach kits (thence Hornby’s Maunsell coaches). Following its January 2012 announcement, in June 2012 Hornby produced the first of the following pull-push coach packs, two came with locomotives (an appropriate M7 and H-class tank engine). Two of the pull-push sets (600 & 610) were produced with air horns, none were produced with UIC First-class yellow banding.
