conversions of SR stock
1.
A
six-car push-pull test unit which continued to carry ex.6 PAN unit no.3027 on
its motorcoaches. This test unit was disbanded in October 1964 and its coaches
either disposed of or used in 6TC unit no.601. Although not designated as a 6
COR unit, this ex.6 PAN unit contained no catering vehicles.

From
13th October 1964 a ‘new’ 6 COR unit (also numbered 3027) was formed
to replace damaged 6 PUL no.3009 for use on the Central Division. This
unit comprising vehicles from units nos.3009, 3014 & 3018.

Subsequent to this, ten ‘new’ 6 COR units were formed from the best of the
former 6 PUL and 6 PAN vehicles for use on the South Eastern
Division. These units were numbered 3041 to 3050.
Push-Pull
Test Trials
Six-Car Test
Unit no.3027
A scratch six-car test unit was formed by April 1964 at Micheldever for push-pull trials on the SED in connection
with the Bournemouth electrification scheme. Devoid of catering vehicles, it
did not run in passenger service and was numbered 3027
(these numbers being already carried on the ex.6 PAN MBS coaches upon its
formation).
The shoebeams were removed and the
unit used for some starting tests on Sole Street Bank. On completion of testing
the six-car test unit was stored at Blackheath, arriving there 30th
June 1964. It was moved to Wimbledon Park about 22nd August
1964.

When testing was completed, six-car test
unit no.3027 was sent to Micheldever for store
(arriving there by 4th October 1964). TSK coaches 10009 and 10014
also TCK 11768 were taken to Eastleigh 11th January 1965 for
conversion and overhaul for use in 6 TC unit 601.
The other three vehicles, MBS coaches
11068 and 11069 with TFK 12266 remained at Micheldever.
All three had been earmarked for use in the proposed Oxted line push‑pull
sets; coaches 11069 & 12266 for ‘Set 301’, and 11068 for ‘Set 302’ but none
were so used. MBS 11068 disposal unknown (probably to Bird Group, Bynea circa October 1965), MBS 11069 scrapped by Bird
Group, Bynea October 1965, moved from Basingstoke 16th
October 1965. TFK 12266 stored as loose vehicle until withdrawn 21st
October 1967 when underframe used for crane‑runner DS70276.
Central
Division 6 COR unit no.3027 at Haywards Heath on the rear of the 10:00hrs Ore
to Victoria service on 18th August 1965. This
6 COR unit no.3027 was formed 13th October 1964 as a hasty
replacement for unit no.3009 (which was damaged at Lovers Walk depot) and was
disbanded in September 1965. The original 6 PAN unit no.3027 was withdrawn on 10th
January 1964 and the motor coaches (carrying number ‘3027’) were formed into
a six-car unit for push-pull testing between April and October 1964 thence to
store at Micheldever. |
Central Division
6 COR Unit no.3027
‘New’ unit number 3027 was formed from 13th October
1964 to replace damaged 6 PUL no.3009 (as follows) and was used in
passenger service. It was classified 6 COR because of the lack of catering
facilities and remained on the Central Division.
Some first-class seating in one TCK was usually downgraded to
second-class due to the excess amount of first-class in this formation.

The three vehicles from unit no.3009
came straight from service, those from unit nos.3014 and 3018 had been in store
at Micheldever then Farnham for some months for use
in ‘push-pull’ tests; all three used in no.3027 having been earmarked for use
in the proposed Oxted line push-pull Set no.307. In this formation the unit
seated 90 first and 244 second, though with one TCK downgraded to all
second seating 54; the unit total became 60 first and 274 second. It weighed
261 tons and was 392' 2" long.
This unit was disbanded in September 1965
and sent to Micheldever for storage, the MBS coaches
being withdrawn and the trailers all stored as loose
stock, all four being condemned 21st October 1967. MBS coaches 11018
and 11035 hauled to Andover for storage 14th December 1965, then to
Wimbledon Park for stripping 5th January 1966 and subsequently
stored at Barnes.
Hauled from Barnes to Clapham Yard 25th
March 1966 and moved to A. King Ltd, Wymondham in April 1966 for
scrapping. All four trailers sold 6th April 1968 for scrapping to
Armytage, Sheepbridge moving from Basingstoke 17th
April 1968, no.10010 arriving in yard 13th May 1968 and the three
TCK coaches all arriving 17th May 1968. These were cut-up as
follows: 10010 on 21st May 1968, 11769 on 24th May 1968,
11758 on 27th May 1968 and 11757 on 29th May 1968.
Working
a Victoria to Ramsgate service (c.1967) 6 COR units nos.3045 & 3047
between Rainham and Newington. These were
the only two 6 COR units to utilise 6 PAN motorcoaches. The shorter 59’ TFK (4th car back) is somewhat
noticeable. |
South Eastern Division
6 COR Units nos.3041 ‑ 3050
Following the introduction of new 4 CIG and 4 BIG
units on Brighton line services from 1965, the 6 PUL and 6 PAN units
were progressively taken out of service and disbanded
and some vehicles were withdrawn, others put into store. Late in 1965 and into
1966 ten ‘new’ units were formed from the best of the former 6 PUL and
6 PAN vehicles and were known as 6 COR units. The first three formed
(nos.3044 /3045 /3046) were taken to Micheldever
where the reforming was carried out, then to Eastleigh for overhaul and
renumbering. Coaches for no.3049 were formed-up at Wimbledon Park prior to
overhaul at Eastleigh and no.3048 was put together at Eastleigh during its
overhaul. Units nos.3041 /3042 /3043 /3050 were reformed at Lovers Walk with
two additional 6 PAN trailers ex. Eastleigh overhaul inserted into
6 PUL formations.
The 6 COR units were intended for use mainly on summer relief
trains, being held as a contingency against late delivery of new stock for the
Bournemouth Electrification Scheme to enable newer stock to be released to
cover on that line. However, new timetables on the South Eastern Division from
July 1967 required an increase in stock and these units were then diagrammed
there, an area where this type of stock had not worked before; they were not
compatible with the other more modern stock in use on these lines and were not
very popular with the crews.
The first few units formed were used initially on 6 PAN
diagrams on the Central division owing to late deliveries of new
4 CIG and 4 BIG units. Unit no.3043 was used, coupled to no.3051 on a
‘Brighton Belle’ working on 25th June 1966. However, the units were
not diagrammed on the South Eastern Division (SED) until the July 1967 timetable
change from 10th July 1967; in the meantime,
spending much of their time in store at various locations on the Central Division
and seeing occasional use on relief and special trains.
To allow the units to work on the South Eastern Division (which had
some loading gauge restrictions) the roof-board brackets were removed from the
cantrail level on all vehicles. Driver training commenced on the SED in June
1967 with nos.3041 /3042 and nos.3045 /3047. Unit nos. 3046 and 3049 were used
in traffic there 17th June 1967. From the new timetable, four pairs
of units were required, mostly only working a few trips per day (into London
during the morning and back in the evening) and with odd additional special and
relief trains as fill-in workings. Units nos.3041 /3042, 3044 /3048, 3045 /3049
and 3046 /3047 were in use on the first day. Maintenance was carried out at
Streatham Hill depot, with other attention at Stewarts Lane and Ramsgate.
The need for these units soon declined with the delivery of some
of the second batch of 4 VEP units onto the Bournemouth line, thereby
releasing 2 HAP units from the SWD back to the SED. The new timetable on
the SED performed poorly as some of the extra trains added overloaded line
capacity. The slower performance of the 6 COR units was seen as a factor
too and they were replaced as soon as alternative stock was available. With
diagrams officially altered in September 1967 when they were relegated to
mostly relief and special workings. The trailer composites downgraded to trailer
seconds when units were formed were officially recorded as altered from 18th
May 1968, though the units were already being little used by that date.
Units nos.3042 /3045 were back in use on the Central Division
briefly in May 1968, whilst nos.3041 & 3046 were among the last to work
late in 1968, making a surprise return the Central Division for a while in
early October covering for a shortage of 4 COR units. The units were not
diagrammed very intensively and spent long periods in store and consequently
had relatively short lives, all being withdrawn for scrapping in the latter
part of 1968, though underframes from some vehicles were salvaged and used as
the basis of long‑welded rail carrying wagons.

Formations
The units were all to the same formation of MBS+TSK+TSK+TFK+TSK+MBS
but were formed in several different ways and were numbered 3041 to 3050.
All units had standard seating capacities and dimensions except the first (no.3041),
which included four vehicles from former 6 CITY unit no.3041 which made it
non‑standard. Unit no.3041 was 383' 2" long and seated
42 first and 288 second and was made up as follows:
MBS,
one of the prototype 56-seat motor coaches ex.6 CITY 3041.
TSK,
one of the downgraded 6 CITY firsts seating 56 second.
TSK, a
former 6 CITY composite (already downgraded ex.first in 1947) and now further downgraded to all
second seating 56.
TFK, a
former 6 PAN vehicle seating 42 first.
TSK, a
former 6 PAN vehicle seating 68 second.
MBS, a
standard 52 seat 6 PUL vehicle.
Unit no.3041 weighed 247 tons and was formed as follows. Unit
numbers in brackets are the former unit in which each vehicle had run, and the
date under the unit number was when the reformed unit entered service.

The remaining nine units were all
392' 2" long and seated 42 first and 304 second. Six units
(nos.3042 /3043 /3044 /3046 /3049 & 3050) comprised former 6 PUL MBS
(52 seats), 6 PUL TSK (68 seats), 6 PUL TCK now downgraded to
all second with eight compartments seating eight (64 seats), 6 PAN
TFK (42 first class seats), 6 PAN TSK (68 seats) and a further
6 PUL MBS; these units weighed 251 tons.
Unit nos.3045 &d 3047 were complete
6 PAN units with the pantry car replaced by a former 6 PUL TCK now
downgraded to all second (64 seats); these two units weighed
247˝ tons. Unit no.3048 was similar to nos.3045 &
3047 but the original 6 PAN unit MBS coaches were replaced by two from a
former 6 PUL unit, this unit also weighed 247˝ tons.

similar details to no.3041 above) and release dates from Eastleigh below unit
number:

Liveries
Units nos.3042 - 3050
All units were given a light overhaul at
Eastleigh and finished in green livery with yellow panels now being applied to
cab fronts.
Unit nos.3042 and 3045 arrived at
Eastleigh 8th January 1968 for overhaul, were repainted into
all-blue livery with full-yellow ends and fitted with two‑tone horns;
no.3042 released 30th January 1968 whilst unit no.3045 was not ready
until 5th April 1968 with a C3 overhaul being done on the two MBS
coaches (unit no.3048 also done); all others remaining green until withdrawal
although most also had two‑tone horns fitted.
It is believed the repainted trailers of
no.3045 were out-berthed at Micheldever for a while
whilst the MBS coaches were being overhauled at Eastleigh. Withdrawn units were
taken to Selhurst for electrical stripping prior to sale for disposal, many
then being stored for a while at Micheldever.
