On a Charing Cross to Sevenoaks service, 4 EPB unit no.5304 enters Dunton Green.

This unit was one of just fourteen which had electric horns protruding from the driving cabs; this was rapidly discontinued following ‘noise’ complaints from drivers.

The photograph was taken on Sunday, 1st October 1961 just three weeks before the closure of the Westerham branch (to the left) with the stations on that branch proudly displayed on the running-in board (to the right).

With the new signalling awaiting commissioning, the signal box closed on 4th March 1962; this being towards the end of the Kent Coast modernisation scheme.

Between 1960 and 1963 Eastleigh Works undertook construction of 4 EPB units to BR standard design. These units differed in many details from the earlier SR pattern units (both in appearance and in electrical equipment) although they were compatible with the older units. These units were equipped with ‘1957 type’ electrical equipment (which was an updated version of the ‘1951 type’ in the older units) featuring such changes as miniature circuit breakers in place of fuses and camshaft control gear replacing contactor gear.

On these ‘1957 type’ units only one motor coach carried a motor generator set and emergency batteries and was designated the ‘No 1 end’ motor coach and on these units was the even numbered vehicle. This also resulted in slight electrical differences in the two otherwise identical trailers, which were therefore designated as ‘No 1’ & ‘No 2’ end vehicles, the ‘No 1’ end trailer coach being marshalled adjacent to the ‘No 1’ end motor coach.

These units were constructed in two batches:  Phase 1 units 5301 to 5356 and Phase 2 units 5357 to 5370

 

Phase 1 units 5301 to 5356

Units 5301 – 5356 (ordered under authority of Head Office Order (HOO) No. 4571) were constructed to replace pre-war units 4301 ‑ 4354; these ‘1957 phase I’ units being built entirely at Eastleigh.

Construction was split after 5344 was finished to enable the ‘Phase 2’ 4 CEP & 4 BEP units to be completed as soon as possible, with the first (5301 & 5307) entering traffic in early March 1960.

Phase 2 units 5357 to 5370

Units 5357 – 5370 (ordered to HOO No. 5032) were built at Eastleigh on new underframes from Ashford and were ‘1957 phase 2’ stock.

The first two units (nos. 5301 & 5302) were non-standard and contained two SR pattern trailers spare as a result of accident damage to older units, both the motor coaches on these two units being of the ‘No 1 end’ type. The motor coaches for these two units were numbered at the end of the number range 61516 to 61627 for the 5301 ‑ 5356 batch. Of these the last four vehicles (61624 to 61627) were built first, two going into 5301, 61624 going to the unique ‘1957 type’ 2 EPB unit 5800 leaving 61627 stored as ‘spare’. Three motor coaches (61524 to 61526) were built to a separate HOO No. 4572 but oddly 61527 was included in those authorised under HO 4571.

A further MBS was then ordered to a separate LOT number, vehicle 61872 being ordered 13th October 1959 as HOO No. 4687 and completed during March 1961 enabling 5302 to be formed. Unit 5302 was completed after 5344 and before 5345. The 5345 – 5356 batch did not enter traffic until the Winter 1961 timetable change, those ready earlier being stored for a short while in the meantime.

The ‘phase II’ units differed visually from the ‘phase I’ stock with a slightly modified cab end design with smaller route indicator window and tapered drivers observation windows, and the coach windows were to a revised type rubber gasket mounted in a separate frame resulting in an external frame.

Express Gear Ratio Units

Several units of the ‘phase I’ batch were fitted when new with express gear ratio, these motor bogies being recovered from their unsuccessful use under 3H and 6B DEMU units, and had Mark 3 roller‑bearing trailer bogies. However following problems with these bogies they were uprated to Mark 4 and exchanged with Mark 1 bogies from the earlier batches of 2 HAP units; these bogies then having modifications carried out and were uprated with additional dampers and springs to Mk 3C & Mk 3D.

Units 5301 ‑ 5320 eventually received the Mk 3D plain bearing version, whilst 5321 upwards had the Mk 3C roller bearing type. All units had two EE 507 motors in each motor coach, the subtype fitted being EE 507E (the SR type 4 EPB units had EE 507D motors whilst the 2 EPB units and all the 2 HAP fleet were mixed with both types). The units originally fitted with express gear ratio were 5303 ‑ 5312 and 5336 ‑ 5344, though this was altered quite quickly and units 5303 ‑ 5319 then had the express motors (5338 retained them also) though all were later fitted with suburban ratio motors during overhauls.

LOT Numbers

Lot numbers for these vehicles were as follows:

5301 ‑ 5356 batch, MBS 30582, TS 30583, ordered 2nd February 1959 (one MBS was 30641, ordered 13th October 1959).

5357 ‑ 5370 batch, MBS 30713, TS 30714, ordered 25th July 1961.

(5301 & 5302 had SR type trailers from earlier Lots).

Units 5345 ‑ 5356 were built with conduits and wiring for AWS fitment at a later date, units 5357 ‑ 5370 being fully fitted from new with Westinghouse AWS equipment though this was sealed out of use until activated on ten of them in March 1983, the others being withdrawn without it ever having been made operational. Similarly, those in the 5345 - 5356 batch were mostly withdrawn without having it brought into use, only the five that were facelifted being fitted, and these got the newer simplified type during these overhauls.

Each unit was 263' 11˝" long and weighed 137 tons, with seating for 392 second class passengers. These units were therefore 6' 6˝" longer than the SR type (and also the 4 SUB units) which led to some problems in certain ‘tight’ sidings, such as that at Holmwood.

MBS

The MBS coaches were identical in internal layout to those of the earlier ‘1951 type’ motor coaches of the BR standard 2 EPB units. These seated 84 in two four-bay saloons with an 8' 9" wide guard’s brake with double opening doors at the outer end; the driver’s cab entered via the brakevan. However, he guard’s brake in 2 EPB units was 8' 11˝" wide so the diagram number in the new units was changed from 400 to 414. These coaches were 63' 11˝" long, those of ‘No 1’ end type weighing 40 tons, ‘No 2’ end vehicles weighing 39 tons.

Externally the MBS coaches were not fitted with roof conduit; at the inner end of the coaches there being vertical conduits on the driver’s side up to the roof-end cable-connection box.

TS

The two trailers were both to the same internal layout, a new design of semi saloon not found in the SR type units, consisting of a five bay open saloon seating 52 and five 12 seat compartments giving a total of 112 seats, and were 63' 6" long and weighed 29 tons. The compartment sections were marshalled together at the centre of the unit. Both trailers were to diagram number 480.

Externally the MBS coaches were not fitted with roof conduit; at the inner end of the coaches there being vertical conduits on the left hand side up to the roof-end cable-connection box.

Hybrid Units

Units 5301 & 5302 both included two SR pattern trailers, a 120 seat 10 compartment TS and a 102 seat 10 bay saloon TSO, and these units seated 390, weighed 136 tons and were 260' 8˝" long.

Experimental Air Horns

Units 5303 to 5315 and 5317 entered service with experimental electric horns, these being mounted below the roofline, protruding from the cab front. These horns were later replaced by the standard air-operated type mounted on the roof following complaints of noise by drivers. However, the small squares of panelling to cover the holes from the former arrangement remained visible for the rest of the lives of these motor coaches.

One of the units fitted with experimental electric horns (believed to be 5311) features north of Oxshott (alongside Heath Road) in a 1964 Edgar Wallace Mystery episode ‘Face of a Stranger’.

Under TOPS

Under the initial BR TOPS classification system in 1972, these units became class 423, this being later amended in 1975 to class 415/2 and facelifted examples later became class 415/6, hence the renumbering of units from August 1987.

Liveries

Units were delivered in all-over green and started receiving small yellow warning panels on cab ends from early-1964, though 5356 /5357 /5358 /5359 /5360 /5361 /5362 /5364 /5366 /5367 all gained full yellow ends whilst still green, unit 5359 being the last to remain green until April 1971.

All units were eventually painted all-over blue with full yellow ends from 1967. Only unit 5305 had blue ends with small yellow panel.

Facelifted units were repainted from Blue /Grey livery into Network SouthEast livery; this being the later, darker blue version with curved upsweeps.

Laycock-Knorr Brake

Twelve of the last built units were fitted new with the Laycock‑Knorr brake, similar to the standard EP brake, but this was removed during the 1970's to standardise all the units.

 

Into Service

The first few units delivered (5303 to 5306) were stored for a while at Gatwick until about 19th March 1960 whilst the express gear ratio batch up to 5313 were then run-in at Selhurst. Unit 5309 was derailed on delivery at Wimbledon Park and slightly damaged. The bulk of the units were delivered to the South Eastern division, working in conjunction with the earlier two & four car EPB units and based at Slade Green depot for maintenance, though they also received some attention at Gillingham, Orpington and Stewarts Lane.

However, a few of the express geared units worked on the Central division running in conjunction with 4 CEP units on some peak hour trains between London and the Sussex coast (these being based at Lovers Walk depot) whilst those working in the Central suburban area were based at Selhurst depot.

Other units were allocated to the South Western division working from Wimbledon Park depot. Units 5361 to 5364 were delivered new to the SWD working mainly on the Cobham line. Unit 5301 was first noted in traffic between Holborn Viaduct and Sevenoaks on 11th March 1960 whilst one of the express gear units (unit 5307) was in use on 5.54pm Victoria to Brighton on 10th March 1960.

Maintenance

Units had their running gear and electrical overhauls carried out at either Slade Green or Chart Leacon depots; major body overhauls were dealt with at Eastleigh with intermediate repaints carried out at Selhurst. The actual allocations of units to divisions altered many times with no specific batches being allocated for any length of time, though these units were never very common working on the SWD.

When depot allocations of units were introduced on the SR in 1972, the complex interworking of the diagrams between the Central and South Eastern divisions precluded splitting the allocation and units remained jointly allocated to Slade Green & Selhurst until 1978 when the allocations were finally split and virtually all this batch were allocated to Slade Green.

Facelifting

Twenty five of the ‘phase I’ units were included in the EPB facelift programme from May 1982 (along similar lines to the SR type units) all work being done at Eastleigh works. All internal partitions were removed so that all seating was in open saloons, reducing the seating capacity of the motor coaches to 82 and the trailers to 102; overall unit capacity now being 368 (the same as in the modified SR type units). Fluorescent lighting and a PA system were installed, and simplified AWS equipment was fitted (or replaced the older Westinghouse type where already partly fitted).

Initially, the units were not renumbered. However, from June 1987 these twenty five units were renumbered in order of shopping into the series 5601 – 5625 (the last of the 2 SAP units previously carrying these numbers having been withdrawn). These facelifted units (all now painted in blue & grey) were allocated to Selhurst on release, displacing non-facelifted SR type units to Slade Green. Continuing deliveries of facelifted SR type units to Selhurst from January 1985 subsequently displaced the facelifted BR units to Slade Green, replacing many of their non-facelifted sisters which were withdrawn for scrapping; the 56xx units being transferred across in number order.

Non-facelifted examples were given lesser overhauls and most also repainted into blue & grey from mid 1982. Due to the large amounts of blue asbestos insulation included in these units when built (this was removed during face-lifting on those units concerned) the remaining units in the 53xx series were all withdrawn from May 1984 to May 1985, with the last seventeen being withdrawn 13th May 1985 and sent to store at Eastleigh, Hither Green, Sevenoaks and Selhurst. Units 5302 and 5307 were withdrawn still in plain blue livery.

The final three facelift units (nos. 5623, 5624 & 5625) were fitted with express gear ratio motor bogies in January 1988 and used on main line trains to Ramsgate to increase seating capacity; these being reclassified as 4 EPB (E), Class 415/7. An increased requirement for further units of this type from October 1988 led to the conversion of units 5607, 5608 & 5609 which were renumbered as 5626, 5627 & 5628.

To distinguish these ‘Express’ units, a short length of cantrail band above each cabside was painted; initially red, but soon changed to green to avoid confusion with the red bands appearing on other EPB units denoting compartment accommodation.

Unit 5602 was the first to be painted into Network South East red/white/blue livery in February 1989 and all twenty five were eventually done. The 4 EPB (E) units reverted to use in the suburban area again from January 1993 and lost their cabside markings, though still retaining express gear ratios. Whilst in use on main line trains they were allocated to Ramsgate depot.

Privatisation and Demise

Units remaining in traffic after 1st April 1994 were all allocated to the ownership of the Eversholt train leasing company under the BR privatisation arrangements. Most of the facelifted units lasted in service until the end of EPB operation, being withdrawn in numbers from late 1994 and all had gone by the end of March 1995.

Unit took two roads at Orpington depot 8‑Mar‑63 and underframe of 15413 damaged. Unit repaired (at Lancing?).

Unit stored from 22‑Jul‑87 at Folkestone East and withdrawn 31‑Aug‑87. Moved to Slade Green 15‑Aug‑87 for reform. TSO 15413 exchanged with TS 15082 (ex.5261) Oct‑87. Both trailers 15043 & 15082 then stored at Hoo Jct. and used along with 15171 (ex withdrawn 5046) marshalled between former 4 SUB MBS coaches of unit 4623 (ADB977294 ex.11305 & ADB977295 ex 11306) for various accident exercises.

MBS coaches 61625 & 61626 stripped at Selhurst and moved to Fratton for store 23‑Sep‑87. Both hauled to Mayer Newman, Snailwell for scrapping 25‑Sep‑87, arriving there 29‑Sep‑87. 61625 burnt 6‑Oct‑87 and 61625 burnt 7‑Oct‑87. Trailers 15043 & 15082 scrapped at C. F. Booth, Rotherham, moving from Clapham Jct. 24‑Nov‑90.

Unit formed from new with two SR pattern trailers, TS 15079 converted from SUB vehicle 10195 (ex.4331) seating 120, and TSO 15121 (ex.5021) seating 102. Both MBS coaches 61627 & 61872 were ‘No. 1 end’ vehicles. Unit delivered out of sequence as SR trailers not ready ex damage repairs/conversion ex SUB and MBS 61627 completed 4‑Jul‑60 at end of 4 EPB batch and stored at Eastleigh (Lot 30582 ordered 2‑Feb‑59 on HOO 4571). MBS 61872 built as first of subsequent batch of 2 HAP units (Lot 30641 ordered 13‑Oct‑59 on HOO 4687) and completed 23‑Mar‑61. Unit released 15‑Jan‑61 with 10195 not renumbered but this altered to 15079 before unit into traffic.

MBS 61872 exchanged with MBS 65308 in Jan‑72. A former 2 EPB vehicle to diagram 400, MBS 65308 had originally become surplus during the formation of the Tadpole 3R sets and was initially used to form 4 EPB 5262. However, between Dec-71 and Jan-72 MBS 65308 was temporarily formed into 2 HAP 6151 whose MBS (no.61966) had been written off in the buffer stop collision at Sheerness-on-Sea. 4 EPB unit 5262 was reformed using SR-type EPB motor coach 14205 and MBS 65308 went into 4-EPB no.5302.

MBS 61627 damaged 5‑Aug‑76 in shunting mishap at Orpington and temporarily exchanged with 61596 (ex.5343) until Sep‑79.

Unit loaned to SWD for Xmas mails & parcels use from 12‑Dec‑83 before withdrawal 24‑Dec‑83 (still in blue livery). MBS 61627 converted to departmental ADB977213 and used in temporary stores unit 020.

Remaining three coaches moved to Fratton for store by 1‑Apr‑84 then hauled to Swindon for stripping 31‑Jan‑86. Hauled to Mayer Newman, Snailwell for scrapping 20‑Jun‑86 and all three coaches burnt 23‑Jun‑86.

Unit repaired with a new cab at Eastleigh between 14‑May‑63 and 4‑Dec‑63 when sent to Micheldever, though MBS 61520 was back at Eastleigh between 2‑Mar‑64 and 10‑Apr‑64 for some further work with remaining 3 coaches. Stored at Micheldever until taken to Eastleigh 7‑Apr‑64 to be reformed to normal.

This was the only BR-type 4 EPB unit to be painted blue with blue ends and small yellow panel at Selhurst in September 1966; gained a full yellow end on next overhaul at Eastleigh in November 1968.

Unit no.5343 appeared at Oxshott station in a 1964 Edgar Wallace Mystery Theatre episode ‘Face of a Stranger’ with actor Jeremy Kemp [1935-2019] disembarking from MBS 61597. Unit no.5106 was also filmed at Oxshott and two further unidentified 4 EPB units (including one of the fourteen with experimental electric horns -  possibly 5311?) feature north of Oxshott (alongside Heath Road).

TS 70455 badly damaged by IRA bomb near Cannon Street 4-Mar-76 and unit reduced to run as 3-car from 18-Mar-76 to 30-Mar-76 then stored. TS 70456 then to ‘new’ 5263 from Aug‑76 to May‑77 pending facelift to SR TSO 15450 (ex SUB TS 10337 from 4605). This coach temporarily transferred to 5343 though never actually formed into it. MBS coaches 61596 & 61597 then formed into a 2-car 2 EPB ‘Power Unit’ numbered 5800 for testing purposes from Aug‑76 to Oct‑76 when 61596 exchanged with damaged 61627 (ex 5302). 61597 exchanged with damaged 61575 (ex 5332) Apr‑78 to Jul‑78.

Formation of 5343 now 61627 + 70455 + 15450 + 61575 with all coaches damaged /under repair and distributed to various repair depots. Facelift of 15450 finally completed May‑77 and to 5263 (with TS 70456 back to 5343) but by Sep‑77 transferred again to ‘new’ unit 5264. Replaced in 5343 by SR type TSO 15258 (ex.5130 then spare stock) which was undergoing fire damage repairs.

Formation now was:-61627 + 70455 + 15258 + 61597. Damage repairs to 61627 completed 15-Sep-79 and own MBS 61596 returned ex.5302. Unit still stopped with both trailers damaged and both MBS coaches spare as 61596 + 70455 + 15258 + 61597 until Jan‑80 when 61596 exchanged with damaged 61995 (ex.5360). Further reformed in Jul‑80 when repairs to 15258 completed and this coach to 5264 as originally intended and 70456 returned.

Formation now was: 61995 (dam) + 70455 (dam) + 70456 + 61597, but in Nov‑80 61596 returned ex.5360 along with both of unit 5360 trailers 70673 & 70674 and unit back to traffic as: 61596 + 70673 + 70674 + 61597. Own trailers 70455 & 70456 shown ‘stopped’ as part of 5360 at this time, but in Feb‑81 repairs to bomb damaged 70455 finally completed and trailers then exchanged with 5360 so unit at last back to original formation. TS 70455 had been repaired as a 102 seat all‑saloon vehicle and unit now seated 382. From Aug‑83, TSO 70455 transferred permanently to 5349 as this unit going to Eastleigh for facelift, and replaced by 70467 (ex.5349) so unit now seated 392 again.

Unit withdrawn 14-May-84 and stored initially at Sevenoaks prior to stripping. Moved to Swindon 26-Oct-84 and hauled to Mayer Newman, Snailwell for scrapping 3-Oct-85. Coaches burnt as follows: 61597 and 70456 both 4-Oct-85, 70467 and 61596 both 8-Oct-85.

3R Tadpole Units - EPB reformations
4 EPB units formed following re-deployment of the 2 EPB Motor Coaches

Following the formation of the Tadpole units the BR-type 2 EPB motor coaches 65300 and 65310 from 2 EPB units 5701 and 5711 along with two ex-Sub augmentation trailers (so both had trailers had compartments) were formed into 4 EPB no. 5261.

Motor coaches 65303 and 65308 from 2 EPB units 5704 and 5709 along with one ex-Sub augmentation trailer and a spare SR EPB trailer were formed into 4 EPB no. 5262.  This unit was later reformed with SR EPB motor coach 14205 in place of 65308, which went to 4 EPB no.5302 via 2 HAP 6151.

Although formed using BR-type 2 EPB motor coaches 4 EPB units 5261 and 5262 were numbered in the SR-type EPB numbering series.

65307 from 2 EPB 5708 was used to replace a damaged motor coach in 4 EPB unit no.5247. Later on 65307 went to 2 EPB unit no.5769 to replace a motor coach written off in a collision.

Only 2 EPB unit no.5710 was reformed with 65309 coupled to spare driving trailer 75636.
